Gunung Tahan is located within the Taman Negara National forest, in the state of Pahang. this mountain is part of the Tahan Range and popular to local climbers.
In Malay language, "gunung" means "mountain" and "tahan" means "endure". Thus the name of the mountain suggest that a certain level of physical endurance is required to conquer the mountain.
Gunung Tahan is considered by many as the toughest trek in South East Asia.
big head, AMANDA would like to share something:
Spent my 21th in Gunung Tahan last day (day 9), unforgettable memory in my life...
After trip...combination of feeling Great experience, great explore, good try... Gunung Tahan empowering me in everything I can try to achieve it.
Me, bruise/cuts here and there. Bite by: Leeches, bees, mosquitoes, ants...etc ( attack by lots of I -dunno-what-the-name-insect) The first night after I come back, 2 hours wake up once and cry once for the pain. Once out, people keep look at me from my face to the leg, with very surprise face. Fell so uncomfortable. =(
Come back one week, see doctor twice and injection. Gunung Tahan beyond my limitation, now I know my physical limit at day 7. After this trip I have better control with my Emotional Intelligent. Aft this trip, the real suffering is everyday every meal panic with what to eat to prevent scar.
Total 9 days 8 night of survivor hiking (including the 0 day we preparing at ARGO chalet). A special task I never done before. U think that easy? We crazy people, 7 of us, dare to take it?! Incredible we make it (although delay one day due to our physical super down at day 7) Ask me about regret? I make the choice. No at all... This what I choose and I am responsible for it. Mine craziest experience ever. After this trip, I have a better know more about myself, about my strength and weaknesses. The real suffering is aft weight loss of 4kg... Lots of food much miss but I cant have them! =( My wound not allow me to do so. I have few birthday invitation I reject (still painful ;p) just hang out with my closer fren, which is MR.CKL, HW & HF.
Precious life, life is short. Life once, live once, no regret. Yes... Here's wht I believe, I always deserve it is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves. But I after I "conquer" this Gunung, people said as the toughest mountain in South East Asia, Gunung Tahan (up down from Kuala Tahan), I am totally conquer by this Mountain, thanks it make me more humble. Because:
一山还有一山高 Explore the creation of GOD is amazing! Gunung Tahan, u will never know the true feeling and our "Spirit of outdoor challenger" during this 8 days 7 night. Is beyond description. We keep push our limits beyond our normal strength. Thanks GOD for the safety trip. Thankful for we back in one piece and I am alive! :D I thought I will die there at day 7, long story. By the way, Gunung Tahan finally is done, we make it. 1 months of prior physical training: swim, gym, cycling, hiking,sports... "consider" effective for my physical.
Thanks my team partner make me better than I am, and help me lots during the trip. Without my team, I am not dare to take this challenge. Toward this common goal, we worked together as a team and we perform well. Plus minus each other limitation. During this trip, I know, cry with someone, (actually we do cry together) Is more healing than crying alone. Besides, forgive everyone in everything, PEACEFUL! Highlight!!! Another funny things is I sent my dirty hiking cloths to a dobby in Wangsa Maju, I guess the Indian shop owner must be shock, due to my cloths got lots of blood. which I kena bit by leeches & there is some cuts of my hands and leg. Kinda funny when I imagine his face expression when open the plastic beg! wahahahahaha....
Special thanks to my others6 mountain hacker of Gunung Tahan:

Then here’s come the day we gather once again, heading to the common goal. Conquer the Mt Tahan with the toughest route. Kuala Tahan – Kuala Tahan.
We had gone through Gunung Dato night walk training, we had went through Gunung Kutu – Chiling Crazy Training l , we had also went through Gunung Nuang Crazy Training ll. We also did CPR, we also did rope throwing, we also did current situation practice, we also shared outdoor knowledge, we also shared evacuation procedure, but the most important thing is, we shared ourselves with the teammates. The things that we learned the most is ourselves through everything that we had done. We know our physical and mentality limit from the training, we know our personalities, altitude or behavior from others no matter it is self-known or self-unknown.
The day before you all left, there were some issues that happened. Everyone was seen externally nothing. But obviously, from the face of Xin Yan and I or maybe some of you, were so nervous, tension and worry looking at the river and thinking of the toughness of the route, the preparation status, the guide experience, the weather that will influence, the decision that will be made during the expedition, the team physical and mentality preparation, the team synergy level, the availability of river crossing, the limitation space of the campsite, the load that the team will be carried, for sure the scene when X-Youth and ODA meet each others…………….
Everyone started to get into the mood when we were arranging the personal load and food. Counting the amount of stuff, then meet the 23 years old guide (Mazuan) and having the late dinner, at night that was the last section and we call it visualization over the days in Tahan. During the night, in the room, on bed, and on floor….there were a lot of pictures of tahan imagination floating in the space of the small little Agoh Family Dorm.
ZZ..Z….Z..Flysheet how to tie…Z..Z..wei.. save some gas….Z..ZZ…the sky going to dark liao…walk faster lar…ZZ…Z..tired…Tired…..Z..Push…Z…Z..ZZ…scare..Z..Oh my rice over cooked..Z..Z..mouse..Z…my legs..Z..Z..wah..take picture take picture…Z..How to cook this..Z…Z..Shit le…Z..Tomorrow is the day………WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO US
Punch card..Punch card.. remember punch card…(the farmer ‘s song still in your minds?)
Chemistry makes me cry….Mt Tahan makes me cry… (the farmer’s song still in your minds?)
Dreaming? Exited? Or too Tension? Can’t sleep.
DAY 1
Wah..not enough sleep ar…
So early Onn Kee already woke up and started to pack his bag and cleared his car. Ryan and Joston went to pack lunch and breakfast. Took the heavy load and crossed the river, heading to the ranger office. Damn good that no need to unpack the bags. The whole morning like no energy and everyone seem so blur.Me too..A simple warming up and we departed. A short distance that JJ, RYAN and JOSTON followed the team in, tears you, shaggy voice from you, waving hands from you, smiley face from you, a high 5 or a hand shake from you……. Made me can’t go in any further with you all..I could’t Tahan anymore that’s why I can’t go tahan. I don’t want you all to see my tear and influence you hiking. Holding the tap of tears, seeing you all leave us further and further. This expedition no longer like others, there was not much laugh but a prepared mentality to face the challenges which going to fall on you. After a series of training, and preparation.. your challenges start now. I can’t help you guys any more but the level of worry that I faced is 10 times higher than the preparation stage. I regret that I totally forgot I wanted to give you all a speech before you all departed, I wanted to tell you all..
“ Is time to show what you have learned, show what you have gotten and prove it to yourself. Your indicator is to reach the peak of tahan together with the team, but your targets, your goal is to conquer your weaknesses and leave it in the jungle and come out with the brand new YOU. Conquer yourself. Fall down, the team support you, he or she fall down, you give support to them.”
But the time was passed… I only can tell it in my heart.. how regret I am. The room suddenly became so quite. The car suddenly became so quite. The journey suddenly became so long and boring. Forced me to take a power nap at Lanchang RnR and continued.
Thinking how suffer you will go through.. what will happen..Can meet the schedule?? All message sending fail…
DAY 2
Was it a good rest yesterday at the mystery campsite?
Message still can’t send through. Yesterday whole night rained in KL. How about you? Today will you all reach Teku? Your legs muscle pain? Everyone OK? CAN CROSS THE RIVER? A lot of bees..careful.
Yes today can receive your calls or message. Because you going to pass through Gunung Rajah.
The time now is … you should be here… you should be taking lunch.. you should be tired…..
Damn it, why no message in. Level of worry is flying up high.20 times le. Why suddenly KL become so quite also, a call to Joston, and both of us having dinner at Pandan Indah. Talking of you all and also predicting where you guys now. Calls from Papa asking when is the best time for him to come meet you guys. We also don’t know. My cell phone went into hospital liao because too many messages were sending fail and caused the cell phone jammed.
DAY 3
Damn it… Why I am not in the team…Why..
Morning, I thought no call will be in again. I was busy for the day. I had stoped to predict because no call was coming still. It is useless to predict without any information.
Yimei?? Yimei??Finally the call in…OMG…
Bee stung… leg bengkak…still walking in dark… Tiring… used inhaler… (the face also turn color in one second…) listening to a tiring and low mentality voice coming out from Xin yan.Shaggy voice…tear in the eyes…telling me…how suffer you all were. In the mean while she also trying so hard not to cry and planned what is the next step and what they can do with the load…
You all did very good le… just hold on it. I didn’t scold you. I am too worried about you all. You all did very well. I swear.
Even thought the bags’ load is lighter or even normal weight, but they still thought it was heavy. This is called mentality distraction. They are tired, mentality exhausted. Brother and sister. Hold it and Gambateh. Tune your mind set and reset yourself ad continue the journey. I know is tough, but you must.
9.45pm you all should reach campsite. OMG is so difficult for you all to take the water at night. Be careful guys. Do not panic and mind your step. Grab yourself. Who should I talk to?? Myself..Shit
Hope to listen to you tomorrow… our promise is tomorrow from Tangga 15.. wait for your call…. Let me start plan from now onward.
DAY 4
I thought you all will call me……….
When I was typing this sentence, you called in. Yeah.. A voice with tears coming from the phone again, can hear that you all OK with laugh from you all. Thanks. Today will be the best day you all ever have, nice scenery and also g long resting day. Don’t forget tomorrow onward you all will be suffer. Please. I don’t know I prefer you all worry or nothing. Bear in mind. The tougher part is going back.. Gambateh. Gedung no line I think. Tomorrow will be happy to see the peak. The suffer that you all pay. Good night X-Youth.
DAY5
I started to pissed off when I heard that youall still on the way down to Gedung Campsite. I mad in the phone with xin yan. But I am wrong again. Sorry Xin Yan that I press on you again. I should let you all decide. Because i really don’t know the condition and how you all now.
I do want to tell you all that, please bear in mind again, you are come here to conquer the mountain as well as yourself. I know you all now physical very low now, but did you all try your best? I do hope that papa, joston and me come to welcoming you all out with the great happiness on your success. But not come out with the mind said that luckily you all make. Remember, a person mind set or mentality that control well will also offset or forget the pain and even the sickness that you all have. But also depend how well you want to control. What is the extend that you put it in. Anyway, also enjoy the hike and also enjoy the success.
Tomorrow your decision is to reach Puteh. You must push yourself and consider the safety. Do not night river crossing.
Day 6
Team was getting worse and worse. Diaries and period. The moment I hate become the moment I love when I get the call but now the love is transform into scare and worry. You have to hold, have to hold. I hope you guys really can push all the way at the last day. All the way out. We are waiting you there. Don’t cry. I say something that I not meant to it again.Be tough. Don’t happen anything that will make me faith le. I am so scare although so clam in the phone.
Day 7
2 nights in Gedung ??? At first I think for so long… It is impossible for you guys to take 2 days. When I started to get impatient and I flash back that actually you guys did very well because you didn’t hire any porter and only 7 of you some more majority size are small.(Even the girls). I cant wait to see you all guys, Papa and Joston were waiting my call to tell them I reach KL and good to go. But my call was to ask them go without me. I was in the Balai Police Port Dickson took a power nap while waiting my colleage to make a report. Because I know I will need more energy to speed to welcome my friends, coming out from the woods. Imagine they all crying and hugging me in a sweat, smelly, dirty shirts. Joy with tears from the eyes. Phone call back to their parents and they proud of what we are doing. But everything had to be postphoned to the next day. A phone call from you told me that you all need one more day. The weight on my heart suddenly increased twice. I was speeding all the way to Taman Negara because of tiring and a MCD drive thur because of hungry. KL tol to Taman Negara, Kuala Tahan it took me 2hr 20 mins. Reached Agoh with 2 bengkak eyes. Saw old friend papa and joston, clam down and talk and sleep.
Day 8
Wake up wake up….wake up lo..they might reach here 12pm. Estimated from Melantai to Kuala Tahan. Took Breakfast and we went to Lubuk Simpon to wait. Swimming, reading, picnic, catching fish, feeding fish, building dam, bird watching with uncle, chit chatting, water jumping, sun bathing, everything we did. But time was passed, HOHOHO a call from you again, just departed from Melantai………..O..OK…. Is ok, A night at camp tengah. We decided to go to have our lunch with another old friend, KC. Lunch half way, a call from you again, shit faster end the calls, the boat engine sound was all around..HeHeHe..we paid very fast and run to lubok simpun. Joston and papa go first surprise, me and KC second. 10..10..10..10... YES YES YES… I love you all. A deep hug to you all. Well done and good job. Hehe.Got people cried yer…HOHOHO
